Why You Should Start Using LSI Keywords Right Now
My previous article about keyword cannibalization mentioned latent semantic indexing keywords, also known as LSI keywords, at the end, but what exactly are LSI keywords and why should you start using them right now?
What Are LSI Keywords?
LSI Keywords are synonyms and plurals of various keywords. They’re often used by webmasters and Internet marketers to avoid keyword cannibalization while also ranking for what search engines will consider a “different” keyword. LSI keywords also have the added benefit of increasing your chances of ranking for the original keyword you were going to use due to the relevancy factor that many search engines employ in their algorithm.
How Do LSI Keywords Work?
For example, if you are trying to rank multiple webpages for the keyword “Search Engine Rankings California”, instead of cannibalizing your keywords by using “Search Engine Rankings California” a hundred times on multiple webpages, you could try using the following LSI keywords to avoid keyword cannibalization and increase your chances of ranking in the search engine results pages (SERPs):
- Search Engine Ranking California
- Search Engine Positioning California
- Search Engine Positionings California
- Search Engine Results California
- Search Engine Result California
- Search Engine Marketing
- Search Engine Optimisation
How Do You Find LSI Keywords?
Use The Google Keyword Planner
The Google Keyword Planner is a nifty little tool that can also display LSI keywords under the “Ad Group Ideas” tab after you do a search for a keyword.
Use Google Keywords
Google’s autocomplete function in their search engine will allow you to find LSI keywords that are searched frequently.
Use A Thesaurus
Since LSI keywords can also be synonyms, it doesn’t hurt to look in a thesaurus, although use caution as some keywords do not have good synonyms (for example, hunt engine is not a synonym for search engine).
Use LSI Keyword Finders
There are many LSI keyword finders available on the Internet, although most of these cost money. There are a few that are free, although you’re better off using one of the above methods most of the time (unless you want bulk LSI Keywords).
